Conversation with Kansas State Senator Carolyn McGinn

Season 2 continues with our 11th episode which features a conversation with a lawmaker in Kansas.

About Today’s Episode

In today’s podcast Lamar and Tom welcome Kansas State Senator Carolyn McGinn. Senator McGinn has represented the 31st District as a Republican since 2005. Prior to serving in the Kansas Senate, she was a Sedgwick County Commissioner. She and her husband, Mark, own and operate McGinn’s Grapes and Grain, a family farm outside of Wichita, Kansas.

In 2012 Senator McGinn was one of nine Kansas senators whose seats were targeted by members of the “Right Wing” of the Republican party. She was the only one who was able to retain her seat.

In January 2025, Carolyn McGinn will retire after some 26 years in political life. She and Mark will focus their retirement on using their farm to promote agri-tourism. In this interview she reflects on her years in public service and talks with Lamar and Tom about the importance of civil dialogue and discussion in passing legislation to benefit communities.

Discussion about this podcast

From Klaus Haus
Getting to 3rd Space with Lamar and Tom
"3rd Space" is a space where two or more people with differing viewpoints, ideologies, and worldviews can come together to hear, listen, share, and connect with one another. In this podcast two lifelong friends, Lamar Roth and Tom Klaus, carve out a 3rd Space where everything can be on the table for open, straightforward, honest, and, yet kind and respectful inquiry. Getting to 3rd Space with Lamar and Tom features an exploration of how to talk with one another about significant, even controversial, issues with grace and humor. Getting to 3rd Space features "Table Talks," modeled after the conversations Lamar and Tom learned to do around the kitchen tables of the Midwestern communities where they grew up. Their "Table Talks" focus on one or two topics each podcast and explore how they, and occasional guests, think and feel about them, and why. Sometimes the podcast will feature a guest and focus on learning more about them and their work.
